Top 10 reasons to check out Killing Cockroaches by Tony Morgan.
10. It has the word ‘musings’ on the cover.
9. The forward is by Andy Stanley.
8. Tony admits that he doesn’t know anything about repairing cars and even shares a funny story about his lack of skill. I identified immediately.
7. The book challenges you to not get bogged down in the small details but to focus on the big picture and things that will propel you and your organization forward. I confess that I’ve killed many cockroaches!
6. The chapters are really short. Really, really short.
5. The book covers everything from marketing, web design, staffing, vision, and culture.
4. There is great insight from other leaders like Pastor Steven Furtick, Craig Groeschel, Mark Batterson, Nelson Searcy, Seth Godin, and Troy Grambling.
3. You can follow a mid-Western guy’s transition to the dirty south.
2. You can learn his feelings about country music, sweet tea, and Clemson football.
1. It challenged me to be a more effective leader and do all that I can so that people far from God can experience life in Christ!
1. UNLEASH: We are taking 35 of our partners to the Unleash conference at Newspring. I believe that this is going to be a great vision enhancing trip for our people! I can’t wait!!
2. THIS WEEKEND: Joni and I are getting away for a couple of days. Just the 2 of us. I am pumped about spending some time with her..ALONE
3. SUNDAY: This week will be the highlight of the Let’s Get It On series. You won’t want to miss it!
Can I just say that I absolutely love what I do! I really feel like God has placed me where my ’sweet spot’ is.
Here are a few things that I love about my job:
a. I get to work with a great Pastor and staff.
b. I get to go to a really cool and fun church that is leading a revolution in the City of Acworth.
c. Our people are phenomenal.
d. We are seeing God do some really good stuff. Life change is happening every week.
e. We are constantly striving to move to the next level.
f. We have been able to connect with some of the sharpest minds in the church world.
Our staff has had the privelage of learning from some of the sharpest young leaders on the planet the past couple of days. We have been hanging out in Charlotte with the staff of Elevation Church.
I think it is safe to say that we have all been stretched in about a million different ways. I really believe all of us are going to return from this trip a more developed person and leader. I can’ t wait to see what kinds of changes this leads to at Freedom Church.
More on this in the upcoming days!
A few months ago, the Middle School Pastor from this church contacted me to see if we could use the help of some of his students this summer. Of course, I would have been dumb to refuse the opportunity to have them help us out.
Today, we used about 20 students and 3 adults to help out McCall Elementary. They spend the time weeding flower beds, planting some flowers, and moving a big ENORMOUS pile of mulch. They did all of this without even complaining once about how hot it was or how tired they were.
When they approached about having the group come, we decided that we would use them to be able to give back to a couple of local schools and the City of Acworth. We could’ve used them to just help us promote Freedom (and we’ll do some of that tomorrow). However, we thought this might be a great opportunity to give back a little to the community.
Here’s what’s on my mind early on Thursday morning:
1. Today is my last day on Jury Duty. If you hear someone screaming between the hours of 4 and 5, it will probably be my scream of jubilee!
2. Please pray for my mother-in-law, Brenda, today. She is having shoulder replacement surgery. It will be a long and painful recovery process for her.
3. My family is in SC until Saturday. What the heck am I going to do here all by myself? Any ideas?
4. I had a great meeting with Michael and Anthony from Oakleaf yesterday. They have been really helpful to us!
5. Every single muscle in my body aches due to the new P90x workout that I am doing. The level of accountability is very high because everyone in the office is doing it too. It is the most intense thing I have ever done.
6. I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to be a part of what God is doing at Freedom Church. The cool part is that the best is yet to come!
Chad Bowen is one of my best friends and was my roommate in college at North Greenville. He is the Lead Pastor at Metamorphosis Church in Greenville, SC.
He and his staff are currently living on the roof of Liquid Highway for 48 hours in an attempt to obtain a bunch of canned food for people who need it.
The event is called Hunger Hurts Greenville. Check it out here!
Update: I just talked to Chad. He informed me that they have surpassed their goal of 2000lbs of canned food. A very cool thing!
Yesterday, I had the awesome opportunity to connect with Daryl Strickland, who is the Executive Pastor at Lifepoint Church in Wilmington, NC. It was almost creepy how many similarities there were in our stories. Daryl was extremely helpful and willing to give me almost an hour of his day. (Breaking news…I just read on their website that he is also a rapper. That makes him even more cool. I’ve secretly wanted to be a rapper but never had the skills.) Be sure to check out his blog.
Lifepoint is doing an incredible job in their city. They are seeing God do some pretty incredible things! I’m looking forward to getting to know them better and learning from them.
